How Far Can a Concrete Line Pump Reach?

Short answer

There is no single distance that applies to every line-pump job.

A practical setup depends on the concrete mix, pipe and hose configuration, elevation, number of bends, site layout and pumping conditions.

That is why we ask for the actual route rather than quoting one universal maximum reach.

Why distance alone is not enough

Customers often measure from the road to the pour and ask whether the pump can reach that distance.

That measurement is useful, but it is only the beginning.

A real line route may need to:

  • Travel around the house
  • Pass through a gate
  • Turn around a corner
  • Drop into a basement
  • Rise over grade changes
  • Follow a foundation
  • Avoid landscaping or other work areas

The line distance can therefore be much greater than the straight-line distance.

What affects line-pump reach?

Concrete Mix

Pumpability depends on the mix design, aggregate, consistency and other characteristics.

Elevation

A substantial rise or drop changes the demands on the system.

Bends

Each turn adds resistance compared with a straight route.

Pipe and Hose

The proportion and arrangement of pipe and flexible hose affect the setup.

Concrete Condition

Delays, temperature and changes in consistency can affect how concrete behaves in the line.

Placement Sequence

The route may need to move as the crew progresses through the pour.

Why longer runs need better planning

As the route becomes longer or more complex, the cost of poor preparation increases.

For a longer run, we want:

  • Accurate distance
  • Approximate elevation
  • Photos or video of the complete path
  • Concrete volume
  • Project type
  • Concrete supplier information if available
  • A clear placement sequence
  • Space for the pump and ready-mix trucks

Horizontal distance vs elevation

A long, relatively straight horizontal route is not the same as a shorter route with a significant vertical rise and several sharp turns.

When describing the job, tell us both:

  • How far the concrete travels
  • How much the placement point rises or falls

This provides a more useful picture of the actual pumping conditions.

How to measure your route

Measure the path the line would realistically follow.

Start where the pump can set up.

Follow the actual path around the property.

Include major turns.

Continue all the way to the farthest placement point.

For complex jobs, a walkthrough video can be more informative than a single measurement.

Does flexible hose change the reach?

Flexible hose is important near the placement area and where the line must move, but the complete configuration should be planned as a system.

A job should not be designed around simply adding hose until the pour is reached.

The line arrangement must remain practical for the concrete mix, route and equipment.

When to call before ordering concrete

Contact us before ordering the ready-mix if:

  • The run is unusually long
  • There is a large elevation change
  • The route has many turns
  • Access is very narrow
  • The job is below grade
  • You are unsure whether the mix is pumpable

Planning these details in advance is easier than solving them after the concrete truck arrives.

Faq

What is the maximum distance a line pump can reach?

There is no one useful maximum for every site. The practical limit depends on the mix, route, elevation and equipment configuration.

Is 100 feet the same on every job?

No. A straight level run and a route with multiple bends or elevation can place very different demands on the pump.

Can you pump farther with rigid pipe?

The line can use different combinations of pipe and flexible hose. The complete setup should be selected for the specific site.

Does the concrete supplier need to know the distance?

For a demanding route, the supplier should know that the concrete will be pumped and that the job involves a longer or more complex line.

Can you assess the route from photos?

Photos are helpful. For long or complicated routes, a walkthrough video plus approximate measurements is better.
